HPE students continue to excel at international sporting events
Students from the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE) continue to perform outstandingly in international sporting events, claiming prizes in badminton, rowing, sailing, jump rope and karate.
The Hong Kong Badminton Team has maintained a high level of performance in international competitions recently. In the Dutch International 2022 badminton tournament held on 13 to 16 April, Ng Tsz-yau and Tsang Hiu-yan, a pair of students from the Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) programme (BHE), won the championship in the Women’s Doubles category while another elite athlete-student also from BHE, Yeung Nga-ting, obtained the silver medal with her partner Yeung Pui-lam. Ng Tsz-yau and Lee Chun-hei beat their Danish opponents in 31 minutes to win the championship in the Mixed Doubles category.

At the Polish Open held in Arłamów on 24 to 27 March 2022, Yeung Nga-ting and her partner Yeung Pui-lam won the Women’s Doubles gold medal for badminton by defeating the Taipei team 21:9 and 21:18 in 31 minutes. The same pair won the Women’s Doubles event in the Portugal International Championships 2022 on 13 March, beating their French opponents 21:14 and 21:8.
The Hong Kong rowing team participated in the China Rowing National Championships 2022 held at Honglian Lake International Water Base in Ezhou, Hubei Province, from 30 March to 3 April 2022. EdUHK’s elite athlete-students in the rowing team obtained outstanding achievements in the competition.
Chiu Hin-chun, a student of the Master of Social Science in Sports Coaching and Management programme, obtained a gold medal in the Lightweight Men’s Single Sculls (2000m) event and ranked sixth in Men's Double Sculls. Three other BHE students also performed well in the competition, with Chan Tik-lun grabbing a silver medal in the Lightweight Men's Single Sculls (2000m) event, Lam San-tung bagging a bronze medal in the Open Men's Pair (12km), and Wong Wai-chun ranking sixth in the Open Men’s Pair (2km) event.

BHE student and two-time Olympian Michael Cheng Chun-leung won a gold medal in the RS:X men’s division at the Asian Sailing Championships held in Abu Dhabi from 27 February to 6 March. Michael has been endeavouring to develop his dual career pathway by managing both his academic studies at EdUHK and sporting career at the same time.

Another BHE student, Yeung Ching-tung, claimed four awards at the International Jump Rope Union Virtual World Championships in January. She and her teammates won the championship in the Double Dutch Speed Relay 4 x 30 and Double Dutch Pair Freestyle, and finished third in the Single Rope Double-Under Relay and Single Rope Pair Freestyle.

At the 2021 Asian Karate Championships held in Almaty, Kazakhstan from 20 to 22 December 2021, the Hong Kong Karate Team won three bronze medals in the Asian Karate Championships Seniors 2021, as well as one gold, one silver and five bronze medals in the Junior Championships.
Three of the medalists in the Hong Kong team are HPE students: Cheng Hui-pan, a BHE student, bagged the silver medal in the U21-60 KG competition, while Wong Sze Man, a student of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sports Science and Coaching, and Wu Lok Man, a student of the Master of Social Sciences in Sports Coaching and Management, claimed the bronze medal in Team Kata.
